Anandpur Chronicles: College Days

College is the dawn of adulthood and freedom in a person’s life. It’s mesmerizing for many to embrace the grace of unadulterated fun while pursuing a stable career and a promising future. It all starts in college days. Some people choose the wrong circle of friends. They become a nuisance to everyone by making a mess of their lives.

Anandpur had a renowned college in its heyday. Its popularity was on the rise among youths from nearby small areas and distant districts. More famous colleges were in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Thus, the less fortunate students went to Anandpur College without hesitation. They pursued their graduation there. The college was well-known at the university level for its football prowess. The college won three times in an inter-college football tournament across Odisha in the 1970s. It was a significant moment, and people were in awe of its talented footballers.

When Maa and her friends entered college, it was an excellent place to learn. The distinction between freedom and recklessness was a thin line. People then adopted the latest fashion trends. The Shammi Kapoor style vibe was popular in college. Girls wore extraordinary dresses like Zeenat Aman’s. Vulgarity and racism didn’t enter the chain of thought of the college kids at a rampant stage. Still, some college students attended drinking parties. Back then, this was considered a bad thing in civilized Indian society. Drugs and ganja were out of the question then, unlike today’s youths and society.

Sports and Physical education played an essential role in the college curriculum. College students considered these games crucial. These included football, cricket, badminton, and track-and-field events such as track racing, javelin, and long jump. Children with exceptional sporting abilities were considered stars among their peers.

Dating and romancing scenes in college were less advanced than they are today. Today’s generation’s penchant for instant gratification was not a choice; it was a given. Love marriage was still a taboo topic then. So, if any girl were found having relationships, then their family members would scorn the girl first for indecent behavior. It was the 70s in India. A few exceptions were also there. College was originally intended for education and for finding employment. A few loafers also managed to get into the college, with minimal success.

The summers at Anandpur College were not the most colorful days of youth for many. Yet, they have long held a place in the hearts of those entering their 60s. They were a mix of youthful naivety and an adventurous journey to adulthood, culminating in graduation.
